Short Layover in Chennai: What You Can Do in a Few Hours

With a layover of under six hours, stay at the airport. With 8 to 12 hours, the Blue Line metro reaches Thousand Lights in about 24 minutes and you can rest, eat and return. Chennai Airport is about 21 km from the centre, and metro trains run roughly 5 AM to 11 PM. Hotel Royal Luxe has 24-hour reception.
How long a layover is worth leaving the airport?
Leaving the airport takes more time than people expect. You pass immigration if arriving internationally, collect bags if they are not checked through, travel into the city, return, and then check in and clear security again. As a rough rule, under six hours is too tight for a city visit, six to eight hours is possible with a plan and more than eight hours is comfortable.
Rules differ for international transit passengers, and visas, airline tickets and baggage arrangements affect what you may do. Check with your airline and with the immigration rules for your passport before deciding to leave the terminal.
If you are unsure, the safe plan is to stay airside, find a quiet seat and keep your phone charged. A missed connection costs far more than a missed city visit.
How far is the city from the airport?
Chennai International Airport is in Tirusulam, about 21 km southwest of the city centre, per Wikipedia. The airport's own site says a taxi to the centre takes around 50 minutes, while the Blue Line metro takes about 24 minutes from the airport to Thousand Lights, based on a route planner. Metro services run from roughly 5 AM to 11 PM.
Terminal numbering at Chennai Airport has changed in recent years, with Wikipedia and the airport's own website describing the terminals slightly differently, so check your ticket and airline notices to find out which terminal you will use for your onward flight.
What can you do in a few hours?
With six to eight hours, a rest and a meal in the city is realistic. Take the metro to Thousand Lights, which is a 3 to 10 minute walk from Hotel Royal Luxe, and spend an hour or two in the area. Semmozhi Poonga, a 20-acre botanical garden on Anna Salai about 750 m from the hotel, is open from 10 AM to 8 PM and closed on Tuesdays, according to Wikipedia. Confirm hours first.
With ten to twelve hours, you could add a short trip to Marina Beach, the Government Museum in Egmore, founded in 1851, or Valluvar Kottam in Nungambakkam. Do not try to see everything. Pick one place and leave time to return.
Keep the plan simple: one outing, one meal, one rest. If you add shopping, you will probably be late. Carry a bottle of water, since Chennai is humid and the metro stations involve walking.
Can you rest at the hotel?
Hotel Royal Luxe has 24-hour reception and luggage assistance. Check-in is at 1 PM and check-out is at 11 AM, and the hotel's listing does not mention hourly or day-use rooms. If you want to rest between flights, call or WhatsApp the hotel in advance and ask what can be arranged for a few hours. Do not assume a room will be available.
If you plan to book a night, Queen and Twin rooms are Rs 1,800 for one guest and Rs 2,000 for two, per room per night, and the Deluxe Room with Kitchen is Rs 2,500. Please reconfirm rates and taxes when you book. If your layover is overnight, a room can make the wait far easier, particularly if you arrive after midnight, since reception never closes.
Check-in and check-out times matter when your layover is overnight. If you land at 2 AM, you can reach the property at any hour because reception is open round the clock, but a standard room is usually released from 1 PM, so confirm with the desk what is possible.
How do you get back on time?
Work backwards from your departure. Subtract your airline's check-in cutoff, then the airport security time, then the metro ride, then a buffer for delays. If your flight is international, ask your airline how early you must be at the terminal and follow it. Aim to be back at Thousand Lights Metro with plenty of time, and do not use the last train as your plan.
Metro trains run until about 11 PM, so after that you will need a cab. Pre-book one, and keep the hotel's number saved. If the monsoon or a cyclone is forecast, between October and December, stay close to the airport, since flooding closed the airport briefly in December 2023, according to Wikipedia.
What should you carry?
Travel light, with your passport, boarding pass, phone, a charger and a power bank. Leave large bags in left luggage at the airport if it is available, or ask the hotel about luggage assistance. Carry a small amount of cash and a metro-ready payment method such as a card or the CMRL app for QR tickets. Call or WhatsApp +91 72001 09033 or +91 72001 09077 with your dates and number of guests.
